Great Western Mountain (2215.59M)
Sixth Highest Mountain in Sri Lanka

Great Western located in Nuwara Eliya District between Watagoda & Radella Railway stations. Approximately between Thalawakela and Nanu oya is picturesque giant on foot hills of Great Western Railway Station.



The name Great Western believed to form as this is the Highest Mountain in the western edge of the Nuwaraliya District. There is a rapid climate changes can be experienced in this mountain surrounding.

Also some believe the name Great Western was used because the mountain geographically behind the Great Western Station and the Station was named Great Western, as the name of the tea estate is Great Western.



When you visit Devon Falls and if you are travelling on the road towards Nanu-Oya Passing Thalawakale you can see this unique mountain to your left. Pundalu Oya Fall (Dunsinane Falls)begins from Northern Slope of Great Western and flows through Kothmale Oya to join Mahaweli River.

Great Western spans about 1.5Km and it can be climbed from both ends. This is one of the toughest hikes in the hill country have to tackle sharp slopes to reach at the top.

The mountain contains Savana Lands, Montane & Sub Montane Ecology and has a rich bio diversity. Leopard, Fox, Hare, Monkeys; Wild Boar, Sambar Deer are recorded from the mountain.

On the top of Great Western there is a shrine and on Thaipongal day and Villagers hike to the top to do prayers and spiritual offering s to God Shiva. From the Top Nuwara Eliya Town & Surroundings, Nanu Oya & Surroundings Samanala Kanda & Seven Virgin Hills, Thalawakele and Pundalu Oya.
